Understanding Islam
Islam as a Religion
Who are Muslims?
The Five Pillars of Islam
At International Quran Academy, our course introduces you to the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the essential acts of worship every Muslim observes. These pillars serve as the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and practice.
1. Shahada (Faith)
Shahada is the first and most important pillar of Islam. It is a simple statement that declares a Muslim’s belief in one God, Allah, and that Muhammad is His messenger. By saying and truly believing in this declaration, a person becomes a Muslim. Shahada is the foundation of Islam, guiding all other beliefs and practices. It reminds Muslims to always worship Allah alone and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
2. Salah (Prayer)
Salah is the daily prayer that Muslims perform five times a day. These prayers happen at specific times: at dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset, and night. Salah helps Muslims stay connected to Allah throughout the day. Each prayer includes specific movements and recitations from the Quran. Through Salah, Muslims show their devotion, ask for forgiveness, and express their gratitude to Allah.
3. Zakat (Charity)
Zakat means giving to those in need and is a way for Muslims to share their wealth with others. Muslims are required to give a small percentage of their savings (usually 2.5%) to help the poor, support community projects, and assist those in need. Zakat helps reduce poverty and strengthens the community by encouraging generosity and care for others.
4. Sawm (Fasting)
Sawm is the act of fasting during the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, meaning they do not eat or drink during daylight hours. Fasting helps Muslims develop self-control, purify their souls, and feel empathy for those who are hungry or less fortunate.
5. Hajj (Pilgrimage)
Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must try to do at least once in their lifetime if they are physically and financially able. The Hajj happens once a year during a specific month in the Islamic calendar. Muslims from all over the world travel to Mecca to perform special prayers and rituals. Completing the Hajj is a great spiritual achievement and a way to show deep devotion to Allah.

Believing in Allah
Who is Allah?
Allah is the one true God in Islam. He is not like humans or any other creation. Allah has no parents, no children, and no beginning or end. Muslims believe that Allah is kind, loving, and forgiving. He created the world and everything in it, and He guides people on how to live a good and peaceful life.
